For some unfortunate people, when it rains it pours. One such person was Ms. Wahab Janea, resident of village Bhoonja, Tehsil Balakot, Distt. Mansehra. Her world collapsed on 8th October 2005. Her family, relatives, home and dreams were reduced to rubble when the devastating earthquake struck. Owing to the large need of patients requiring specialized care, 5 additional subspecialty clinics were started at LRBT Free Base Eye Care Hospital, Korangi 2 ½ Karachi. These are: Vitreo- Retina Medical Retina Glaucoma Cornea and External eye Disorders Occuplastics All these clinics are equipped with basic diagnostic equipment. LRBT is continuously upgrading and expanding its facilities in order to meet the increasing inflow of patients throughout its hospitals.

Rashidabad hospital is located 30 km east of Hyderabad on the road to Mirpurkhas. This hospital has been built for us to our specifications by the Rashid Memorial Welfare Organisation and leased to us for 50 years at a nominal rent of Rs 100 per month. It has replaced the one located at Tando Adam, which has been converted into a Primary Eye Care centre (PEC). The hospital will provide Free Eye Care services to 8 million people living in its catchment area of Hyderabad, Tando Allahyar, Mirpurkhas, Umerkot, Sanghar and Nawabshah Districts.

As a part of the Corporate Social Responsibility initiative of Abbott Laboratories, Pakistan, Mr. Asif Jooma, General Manager and Ms. Saima Kamila Khan, Company Secretary, visited the LRBT Free Tertiary Eye Hospital in Korangi, Karachi, on May 14, 2008, where they donated $ 15,000 to Mr. Saquib Hameed Honorary CEO of LRBT for performing cataract surgery on 600 needy patients. They also met a number of cataract patients on the occasion.

District Governor Aziz Memon, President Fakhri and members of the Rotary Club of Karachi South visited LRBT Free Tertiary Eye Hospital on 3rd May, 2008 to launch their Matching Grant Project in partnership with the Rotary Club of Spring Township Centennial, USA to restore the vision of 2000 poor patients as a part of the Rotary Support Programme for ‘Eradication of Avoidable Blindness’. This project will cost US$50,000. An MOU was signed between the parties on this occasion.

Pasrur Eye Hospital has commenced full operation from April 1st 2008. The hospital has been funded by Mr Zakaullah, his family and friends and is LRBT’s 15th hospital. It is located 30 km from Sialkot and about 45 km from Gujranwala and will provide Free Eye Care services to 7 million people living in Pasrur as well as, Sialkot, Narowal and Gujranwala Districts thus rolling back the growth of curable blindness in its catchment areas.

Members of the Rotary Club of Lahore Garrison visited LRBT Hospital in Lahore township to offer a grant of Rs 0.87 million for 580 free IOL for surgeries to be conducted as part of the The Rotary Foundation Matching Grant No 63132. The Rotary club of Ferney- Voltaire France, Rotary Club of Cambridge USA and Rotary International districts 1710 France and 5390 USA are the international sponsors for the grant.

Standard Chartered Bank has agreed to support LRBT’s mission to eradicate curable blindness through their aid of $300,000 over a period of three years through Sight Savers International.
