LRBT Free Eye Care Hospital offers diplomas to Ophthalmic Technicians, Ophthalmic OT technicians and Refractionists through their Ophthalmic School of Paramedicine. Each year around 50 to 60 students obtain certification of professional training for Eye related courses. These courses prepare students for careers in ophthalmic services. Upon completion of an accredited paramedic program, individuals are eligible to sit for the certification exam. These courses are affiliated by Sindh Medical Faculty and JMDC.

Students from all over Pakistan seek admission for professional training each year. Entry onto many of the courses is through the admissions process. All of these courses are fulltime, and as a student one will have to pay a nominal tuition fee. At times some donors may support the program and provide support for the students, details of any such support can be obtained from the student co-ordinator.

A full time teaching faculty is present. The teaching faculty department of LRBT School of Paramedicine advance their teaching techniques and training by ongoing workshops on training, curriculum designing etc. It would be pertinent to add that LRBT is providing all its internal trainees boarding and lodging facilities during the duration of their course.

Ophthalmic Technician Certification

Ophthalmic technician is already in the process of becoming a 2 year program and shall be called Ophthalmic Assistant Course/Diploma. 20 students graduated in 2011 and all are now working .The course aim to teach skills required to understand, diagnose, treat and prevent eye diseases prevalent in population. The course is continually updated in response to changing needs, new development in knowledge according to advancement in technology and students feedback. Lectures cover topic ranging from basic epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical features, diagnosis, management and prevention of these diseases.


The course is designed to teach refraction trainees the skills required to understand, diagnose, treat and prevent complications of refractive errors that are prevalent in population. A particular feature of the course is the diversity of students who attend it. 10 students will be taken in the course each year. The principal objective of the course is to provide refractionist with learning opportunities and experience which will enable them to explore, improve their knowledgebase and develop confidence in their expertise as a refractionist.

Ophthalmic O.T Technician

The time duration of Operation Theatre Technician course is one year. This course combines a series of lectures, interactive learning sessions, demonstrations and substantial exposure to clinical work. The academic staff teaching on the course is from a very experienced background of working in the Operation Theatre. This training prepares the student to take on the position of an Ophthalmic Operation Theater Technician (OOTT), and become a competent and reliable member of the health care team.
